Students

The rise of AI is also changing education. You may be wondering what this means for you, and what is and isn't allowed. On this platform, we share information about how you, as a student, can and may use AI in your studies.

The university has an open attitude towards AI. As a student, you are given the space and opportunity to learn with AI, including to align your study career with your future research or work environment.

Behind the scenes, we are therefore working on a secure platform that makes the use of Generative AI (GenAI) accessible. We are also working on selecting secure AI tools for education and considering new forms of education and learning experiences with AI. This is not limited to Generative AI: programmes can apply all kinds of different types of AI systems and tools in the educational environment.

Practical frameworks

As a student, you need clear practical frameworks within which you can work with AI. These frameworks are indicated by the so-called AI index. In this index, you will find five levels at which you may apply AI for or in your studies. The teacher/course coordinator determines at which of the five levels AI may be used within your course or assignment.

You are not permitted to create an account with an AI tool using your UU email address or SolisID unless the AI system or tool is provided by the university and has been deemed safe. A list of safe AI tools is currently being compiled. More conditions of use relating to AI can be found on the page Conditions of use of AI tools for students.

Conditions of use

To learn more about AI, several AI student modules have been developed, with more to follow in the coming years on various AI-related topics. This will ensure that you, as a student, are well prepared for the future.

AI policy in education

By AI in education, we basically mean all forms of artificial intelligence that are used for educational purposes. This includes algorithms and techniques such as machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, expert systems, learning analytics, adaptive learning, XR and VR that use artificial intelligence. AI systems such as autonomously manoeuvring drones or AI systems for health monitoring are also included, insofar as they are used for educational purposes.

At the university, we strive to give all students of all educational programmes the opportunity to experience AI. AI will encourage further innovation within our education.

The use of AI in education is subject to the necessary legislation, regulations and ethical frameworks. That is why you will hear more and more about what we call Responsible AI: a way of working and learning with AI that is ethically responsible and value-driven, and falls within legal frameworks.

We believe it is important that the autonomy of our university, lecturers and students remains guaranteed and that we retain control over our data. When drawing up AI policy, we take the core values of Responsible AI as our starting point. Read more about Responsible AI in the UU AI Ethical Code of Conduct.

We will put your name on a list and contact you when there is something to discuss or test. Based on your interest and availability, you can then decide on a case-by-case basis whether to participate or not. Naturally, we will not share your name with others. By filling in the form now, we will save your name during the 2025-2026 academic year. We clean up the list every academic year.
