Knowledge Security and AI

More and more AI tools are becoming available from countries with knowledge security risks (see the intranet page , login required). Examples include Deepseek, Manus, ERNIE, Qwen, Mimo, Kimi, SenseTime, Yuanbao, etc.

DeepSeek, a Chinese open-source AI model (R1), appears to be capable of delivering performance comparable to leading known AI models, but with lower development costs and less computing power. This makes it attractive for sustainability reasons. However, the has issued a warning about the use of Deepseek.

As with all AI tools for which we as UU have not made agreements with the supplier or for which we have not been able to assess the AI tool as safe, these tools may not be used for educational purposes. It is therefore not permitted to create an account with a UU Solis ID or a UU email address to gain access to these AI tools.

AI models from countries with knowledge security risks are controversial because there are some doubts about, for example, the data on which these models are trained, the fundamental values and rights they embody, and the overall security of the AI models. This also applies to open-source AI models from these countries.

Open-source AI models from countries with uncertain knowledge security

Downloading these AI tools on a UU laptop is not permitted for educational purposes . The same applies to the use of open-source models or the use of these AI tools as plug-ins. As soon as you use the official API or app, your input leaves your own infrastructure. An additional reason for this is the fact that there is no regulation for open-source AI models (Art 2.12 EU AI Act).

Private use of AI models from countries with uncertain knowledge security

For personal private use, we ask users not to share any UU data, data from students or UU colleagues, or personal data such as address, employer, etc., and not to use a password that is the same as or similar to that of your UU account/Solis ID.

You may also be required to create an AI tool account using your personal Google, Apple, or Microsoft account. Be cautious, as it grants further access to your personal data.
