Information for breeders

Veterinary Breeding Screening is a method that enables breeders to gain insight into specific risks of transmission of hereditary disorders in their breeding animals through their own veterinarian. To familiarise veterinarians and breeders in the Netherlands with veterinary breeding screening, the Expertise Centre is launching a pilot project. Veterinarians can register for this pilot project.

Participating veterinarians will ask breeders to join the pilot project. Interested breeders can ask their own veterinarian whether they (want to) participate in the pilot project. After participating, breeders will also receive a feedback form to share their experiences.

Important points of attention:

  • The pilot project focuses exclusively on dogs.
  • Breeders are asked to complete a questionnaire (in Dutch) in advance and to send in any known data (DNA tests, screening results, etc.).
  • The veterinary procedures are non-invasive: no blood sampling or sedation is required.
  • Participation is voluntary and the results of the screening will be treated confidentially.

If necessary, additional testing may be recommended.
