DNA tests and storage
The Expertise Center for Veterinary Genetics conducts genetic research to identify the causes of hereditary diseases. Once the causative mutations have been identified, we develop DNA tests that breeders can use to prevent disease in offspring. As an owner or breeder, you can have your dog or cat's DNA tested. This allows one to determine whether an animal has a hereditary predisposition to certain conditions.
DNA tests
A DNA test can serve various purposes:
In animals with unclear symptoms, to determine whether a hereditary disease is the cause (diagnostics)
In animals that are potentially used for breeding, to prevent hereditary disorders from being passed on to offspring (prevention)
To determine susceptibility to a particular condition, in order to prevent the animal from becoming ill by making adjustments to its diet, for example (prevention)
To detect a hereditary predisposition at an early stage to enable faster and more targeted treatment and prevent the risk of sick offspring
Embark
We also work closely with Embark. By ordering an Embark test, one can contribute to research and to a healthier dog population. The test screens for more than 200 hereditary disorders. The results help us develop new DNA tests and prevent diseases through targeted breeding and screening programs.

DNA storage
We offer the option of storing your dog or cat's DNA indefinitely. We also offer this service to breed associations and breeding organisations. The DNA will then be available in the future for research or for newly developed tests.
