Breeding counselling

Breeding guidance is an essential part of responsible pet ownership and breeding. Within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, intensive collaboration is taking place on the development of scientifically based and practically applicable guidance for breeders, with the aim of achieving healthier animals and reducing hereditary disorders.

The Expertise Centre for Veterinary Genetics and the Companion Animal Reproduction Department offer specialised guidance on breeding companion animals. This guidance is provided at the  (in Dutch).

Veterinary clinical genetic consultation

The Expertise Centre offers the possibility to request a veterinary clinical genetic consultation, during which our geneticists and veterinary specialists provide targeted advice.

Questions

Do you have questions about:

  • The interpretation of DNA test results?

  • Which screening tests would be useful for your (breeding) animal?

  • Whether a disease or abnormality could be hereditary?

Support

The Expertise Centre supports breeders with:

  • Breed-specific breeding advice, based on the prevention and treatment of hereditary disorders

  • Analysis of genetic diversity, to prevent inbreeding and new hereditary problems

  • Breed-specific incidence measurements via PetScan

  • Development of clinical screening tests

  • Research into DNA mutations that cause disease

Fertility counselling

Veterinary specialists from the Companion Animal Reproduction Department perform fertility tests on both male and female dogs. Male dogs can be examined for their genitals, reproductive organs and sperm quality. Sperm storage and freezing are also possible. For females, the guidance focuses on determining the optimal mating time, artificial insemination and support with the import and export of sperm.
