Preprints

A preprint is an open access draft version of a scientific paper that has (not yet) been peer reviewed. It is wise to share your preprint on a preprint server even before you have submitted it to a journal.

Benefits of sharing a preprint open access

  • Your research results are directly available, whereas publishing an article in a journal can take several months or even longer.
  • It can result in additional peer or community feedback. You can use this to improve your publication.
  • You can refer to your preprint when you apply for a grant from a research funder.
  • It contributes to your visibility; others can immediately see what you are working on.
  • Others can quote your preprint in their research before you have published.

Please note: sharing a preprint in open access is not the same as making your final publication available in open access. This therefore does not yet fulfil any requirements for open access publishing from your research funder.

Sharing a preprint on a preprint server

You can share your preprint on a so-called preprint server. Most of these preprint servers focus on specific disciplines, such as Science (), Medicine (), Biology () or Sociology (). There are also preprint servers for all disciplines, such as  and . Create an account on these servers and upload your preprint.

Do you want your preprint in the overview on your profile page in the UU Research Portal and on the UU website? Then upload your preprint in the

Journal policies

Most journals accept submissions of articles that have already been shared as preprints. You can check publishers' preprint policies on .

Findability by search engines

Most preprint servers become findable through search systems such as Google Scholar, OpenAlex, Dimensions, LENS and EuropePMC. After publishing your article in a journal, you can add a reference to this published version to your preprint. Sharing the research process contributes to Open Science
