Funding open access

Open access (OA) publishing may involve costs.  These costs are also called Article Processing Charges or APCs, or Book Processing Charges or BPCs. Publishers determine how much money must be paid. This page tells you how to finance APCs for open access.

Via discount agreements with publishers (for articles)

Via research funders

More and more research funders are willing to pay for the cost of open access publishing in addition to funding the research. The arrangements for this are set out in the agreement with your funder. Check out the general possibilities per funder below.

Via diamond open access

There are also many journals that do not charge publication fees. These are diamond open access journals. You can find them in the UU journal browser as gold open access journals, with the note 鈥減robably no APC costs鈥.

Via green open access

If a journal does charge fees, there is no publisher deal, and you do not have an external research funder offering a grant to pay the APCs, then the green route to open access is also an option.
