Open access articles

You can publish articles open access in different ways. The preferred route is one that makes an article directly open access available under an open license.

Your options for open access publishing depend on your research budget, any requirements of your funder and the possibilities offered by the publisher.

Publication routes for articles

  • Gold open access (via open access journals)
  • Diamond open access (via open access journals)
  • Hybrid open access (via hybrid open access journals)
  • Green open access (via UU Repository 6 months after closed access publication)

Gold (via open access journals)

In the gold route, publishers ask authors to pay publication costs. These costs are called article processing charges (APCs). Sometimes, as an author, you can make use of discount agreements on these charges. If there is no 100% discount agreement, you may be able to pay these costs from your research budget. Check whether this is possible before choosing a journal to publish in. That way, you will not be faced with unexpected costs.

You can find open access journals in the . Look for 'full open access journals'.

Diamond (via open access journals)

Diamond is a variant of gold, where no APCs are levied. The costs of open access publishing are covered by external funders. Diamond open access journals are called 鈥渘on-APC journals鈥 by the Directory of Open Access Journals. It is currently the cheapest and globally fairest way to publish articles directly open access.

You can find open access journals in the . You will recognise them as fully open access journals, with 'probably no APC costs' attached.

Hybrid (via hybrid open access journals)

Hybrid open access journals publish both closed and open access articles. You buy your article freely from the publisher, allowing readers free access. For this, you pay APCs.

You can find hyrbid open access journals in the . You will recognise them as 'open request journals'.

Green (via the UU repository 6 months after closed access publication)

Via the green route, you share your published article or your Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) open access via the UU institutional repository, found in the . The library automatically publishes all closed articles open access after a six-month embargo, unless you opt-out. However, your Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) can be published directly open access. There is no charge for the green route. Read more about green open access on our page.
