Thematic Communities

Our research is interdisciplinary by nature and combines fundamental, clinical, translational and applied research.

Six thematic Life Sciences communities form the foundation of Utrecht Life Sciences. They provide a base where scientists meet, share knowledge, and launch new initiatives. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, these communities drive progress on key societal challenges in health, sustainability, and resilience. Researchers from diverse disciplines work across faculty boundaries and in partnership with society to turn scientific insights into real-world impact.

In their simplest form, our communities spark exchange by hosting symposia, sharing research, organizing community-building events, and engaging PhD and MSc students. As they develop, they grow into larger knowledge clusters that coordinate joint activities, build state-of-the-art facilities, and form strategic networks that include societal partners. In every form, the communities make expertise more visible and accessible, both within Utrecht Life Sciences and to external audiences.
