Sustainable Life Sciences
Research and innovations rely heavily on technologies that consume significant energy and generate substantial waste. Recognizing this impact, Utrecht Life Sciences institutions are taking meaningful steps towards sustainability and are working together to reduce their environmental footprint
Advancing sustainability in Life Sciences research and innovation.
Our goal
Our goal is to reduce the environmental impact of scientific research and innovative healthcare at Utrecht Science Park.
The sustainability efforts focus on six key areas:
- Recycling and exchange: equipment, substances and disposables
- Energy: Reducing consumption and improving efficiency
- Waste: Minimizing and laboratory and clinical waste
- Water: Promoting responsible usage and management
- ICT: Optimizing digital infrastructure for sustainability
- Sharing information: exchange ideas and solutions
LABEX is a digital platform for offering and finding surplus lab materials — including equipment, chemicals, and disposables — from colleagues across Utrecht Science Park. Whether you're cleaning out a storage cabinet or you are on the verge of throwing out something that is still perfectly usable, LABEX helps you connect quickly and directly with other labs in the area. LABEX gives lab materials a second life.
Green and Sustainability Teams
Each institution within Utrecht Life Sciences has established its own team, composed of students, researchers, and staff. These teams work to identify sustainability challenges and opportunities within their faculties and initiate impactful projects. Their strength lies in their faculty-specific approach, allowing tailored solutions and deeper engagement.
