Voor dit onderzoek werkte de Utrechtse masterstudent Sophie ten Hietbrink vier weken lang aan boord van het onderzoeksschip RV Pelagia. Op een tocht van de Azoren naar het continentaal plat van Europa nam zij op twaalf locaties watermonsters waar zij alles dat groter was dan één micrometer uitfilterde.

Volgens de Adviesraad Internationale Vraagstukken moet Nederland in Europees verband opkomen voor AI-ontwikkeling in lijn met de democratische rechtsstaat.
