Even though this is the last alumni newsletter of 2024, we have a first: a newsletter in a new design! A lot of hard work went into the creation of the new design for our newsletter this year, and today we are taking it into use for the first time. We are very happy with the result and hope you like the new layout as much as we do.

Furthermore, in this newsletter, you will read more about the budget cuts that put pressure on higher education, the (re)opening of our beloved Dom Tower, strategic monkey love and our graduation ceremonies. Happy reading!

Budget cuts higher education

The announced cuts strike at the heart of what we believe is important as an academic community. Today, Monday 25 November, there's a protest in Den Haag. You can show your support by signing the petition.

Inviting grandma to graduation?

The UU considers a ‘festive’ graduation important. However, the number of people a student is allowed to invite varies considerably across the UU. How many friends and family members should each graduate be allowed to invite?

It’s not just love: primates also bond for their own benefit

Baboons in love

Female and male primates often form close bonds, but not purely out of affection. Close relationships usually evolve when there is a clear benefit for both parties, with protection and reproductive control playing key roles. A new study, led by primatologist Liesbeth Sterck among others, provides theoretical insights in how these bonds are formed.

Sint Maarten and ‘unveiling’ Dom Tower

Light sculpture of Dom Tower being carried as part of the Saint Martin parade 2024 in Utrecht

Some current UU students had never seen it before: a Dom Tower without scaffolding. Piece by piece, the icon of our city reappeared last year, until it was visible again in full glory a few months ago. To celebrate this joyous fact, Queen Máxima and Mayor Sharon Dijksma unveiled the new lighting of the Dom Tower on 9 November. At the same time, the light show was the magnificent conclusion of another real Utrecht spectacle: the Sint Maarten light parade.

Scientific talent is our hope for the future. Because what if they do find an answer to chronic diseases, environmental pollution and poverty? Then the future will look very different...
