• Rutger Kopland / Prof.dr.Rudy van den Hoofdakker. Rutger Kopland kreeg zijn eredoctoraat vanwege zijn dichterlijke oeuvre en voor zijn werk als psychiater en neurowetenschapper. Zijn oeuvre behoort tot de belangrijkste uit de Nederlandse poëzie. In 1988 won hij de P.C.Hooftprijs. Hiernaast heeft Prof.dr.Rudy van den Hoofdakker, veel betekend voor de psychiatrie en het hersenonderzoek in het algemeen.​​

• Prof.dr. Marcel Reich-Ranicki heeft een grote staat van dienst, niet alleen als literatuurcriticus maar ook als mediator tussen de literatuur en een groot publiek. Hij krijgt het eredoctoraat dan ook vanwege deze brugfunctie.
• Koning Juan Carlos. Op 25 oktober 2001 is het eredoctoraat uitgereikt aan koning Juan Carlos van Spanje tijdens zijn staatsbezoek aan Nederland. In zijn laudatio prijst erepromotor prof.mr. Henk Kummeling 'de voortreffelijke wijze waarop de koning zijn ambt vervult'. Hij wees op de rol die Juan Carlos sinds zijn aantreden als koning heeft gespeeld om de nog jonge Spaanse democratie veilig te stellen. Sinds die tijd speelt het Spaanse constitutionele recht een grote rol bij vergelijkend onderzoek in Europees verband. Omdat ook in Utrecht veel aandacht besteed wordt aan de rechtvergelijkende studies van processen zoals de Europese integratie en de ontwikkeling van mensenrechten, rechtsstaat en democratie, is het niet meer dan terecht dat Utrecht de Spaanse koning dit eredoctoraat toekent, aldus Kummeling.
