First Symposium NWA ‘Transition to a Sustainable Food System"

Publication-download introduces the GAIN transition model, a novel framework based on gamification which provides a holistic and actionable framework for SFSC actors to coalesce and strategize around a common vision. We illustrate the underlying principles of GAIN and its potential for institutionalizing SFSCs.

As a result of a POP3 Oat-project in the Province of Utrecht, Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ, Wageningen ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ & Research and Keep Food Simple set up a ‘Taskforce Oats’ in 2021. At the beginning of 2022, the taskforce published a position paper ‘Reintroducing Oats in the Netherlands’.

Dr. Michelle Bal and Dr. Marijn Stok (Faculty of Social Sciences) have been awarded an NWO Open Competition- SSH grant involving over 750.000 Euros. They will conduct four years of research into how young people, especially from lower socio-economic groups, think about more sustainable food options.

Future Food invites UU and UMCU researchers to participate in a two-day Sandpit-based workshop to build a partnership and develop a multidisciplinary research proposal on fair food transitions.

Earlier this summer, Local2Local Talents, Local2Local & Grounded put out a call to their community for Harvest Heroes. 16 Heroes answered this call and from Aug 22 to Sept 10 they rolled up their sleeves / took off their shirts and got to work at the root of the food chain, harvesting organic pears.

The Dutch Food Week has developed a new strategy in 2021 which will be further developed in 2022.

In the past few weeks, the importance of a healthy food environment has been widely discussed in Dutch parliamentary circles. On 21 March there was a roundtable discussion on lifestyle prevention. Sanne Djojosoeparto, PhD-researcher at Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ (Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning) was one of the co-authors of a position paper that was presented by the lead author Maartje Poelman (Wageningen ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ & Research).

The Table Talk podcast of Food Matters Live explores the future of food and nutrition. The overall objective of this thesis was to gain insight into the opportunities and risks of a free range for the welfare of laying hens, with the ultimate aim of optimizing hen welfare including health.

On March 9, Food-Print Utrecht Region organized the Utrecht food debate with 14 political parties in the council chamber of the city hall in Utrecht. The parties debated each other on the basis of four propositions.

The ongoing nitrogen crisis in the Netherlands and Flanders illustrates how ineffective management of nutrients can lead to both serious ecological damage and political and societal upheaval.

Few food products and food promotions in supermarkets and food service outlets align with the National Dietary Guidelines. Structural monitoring of the food environment is needed.
