After a long awaited break due to the pandemic, Groentetas is officially back and full of energy to restart their operations! Groentetas, or ‘vegetable bag’ in Dutch, is an Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ based non-profit organization that was founded in 1994 to provide the local community with healthy, affordable and sustainably produced fruits and vegetables. The company is entirely managed by student volunteers that want to act to make a step towards sustainability and teach their community about the importance and benefits of eating locally produced food. Due to some organizational changes during the pandemic, Groentetas will now start the year with products from Instock, which is an Amsterdam-based company that rescues food from growers, packaging companies and producers. Most of the Groentetas contents therefore consist of foods which would have otherwise been wasted, but have passed Instock’s rigid quality check system and are perfectly suitable for consumption. This new element of the Groentetas model highlights the severe issue of food waste and prevents extensive amounts of delicious, perfectly good fruits and veggies from going into the trash. However Groentetas is still working closely with their partners at Local2local to incorporate locally produced food alongside rescued food in the veggie bags, which links back to the original ambition of supporting local sustainable food producers. To order your weekly Groentetas, please go to the website . Place your order before Wednesday at midnight to be picked up on the collection day the following Monday. The veggie bag costs €6, and can be collected from the Educatorium canteen at the Science park from 11:00-14:00, or Parnassos in the city centre from 17:30-20:30. An email is sent out to all customers on Fridays to outline the contents of the bag and to suggest some recipes, as this gives everyone a chance to get any extra ingredients they might like. As this is a waste-free initiative, please bring your own reusable bag to collect your veggies.
