Molecular and functional characterisation of rare CFTR variants
Juliet Lefferts
What was your PhD about?
"My PhD research was in the lab of Jeffrey Beeman, and was focussed on cystic fibrosis (CF). In particularly, we studied rare CFTR variants and their effect on CFTR function in patient-derived intestinal organoids (PDIOs). We used these PDIOs to identify people with cystic fibrosis (CF) that are currently not eligible for treatment, that could benefit from this treatment. Additionally, we aimed to better understand the effect of ultra-rare or complex CFTR variants on CFTR function. Finally, we developed new assay models to increase the dynamic range of functional CFTR measurements in PDIOs, and potentially improve automation and accessibility of CFTR function measurements."
What is your fondest memory of your time at RMU?
"My fondest memories are of working in the organoid lab and the ‘Beekman office’ and all the hours spent preparing for the ‘Alternatieve Elfstedentocht’ at the Weissensee in Austria."
What are you going to do next?
"I would like to continue working in research, and am taking this time to evaluate my future options and direction."
