About us

Regenerative Medicine Utrecht is a world-renowned collaboration of excellent knowledge institutes and start-ups, located at the Utrecht Science Park. We focus on restoring health and vitality instead of symptom control. By repairing, replacing, or regenerating cells, tissues, and organs we aim to cure patients.

We bring together researchers from UMC Utrecht, Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 (UU) and the Hubrecht Institute. At UMC Utrecht, is one of the six strategic programs and is an integral part of the Regenerative Medicine thematic community within Utrecht 木瓜福利影视's Strategic Theme Life Sciences. In Utrecht, we have the full bench to bedside capability and focus on three areas: Cardiorenal Tissue Regeneration, Musculoskeletal Tissue Regeneration and Stem Cell & Organoid Biology.

All disciplines under one roof

To facilitate innovation in this interdisciplinary field, the majority of our researchers works together at the Regenerative Medicine Center Utrecht (RMCU). At RMCU, approximately 350 researchers from UMC Utrecht, Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 and the Hubrecht Institute collaborate in a single location, sharing state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. The close proximity, shared resources and facilities, enhance daily interaction and collaboration, and strengthen connections to the clinic.

From fundamental science to applications

Regenerative medicine is not just a promise for future healthcare, it is already reshaping how we understand, treat, and ultimately cure diseases. It has a wide range of applications including cell and gene therapy, biomaterials, tissue engineering and in vitro models. At RMU, these fields converge to explore everything from the smallest molecules to entire organisms. From fundamental science to clinical application, all our research shares the goal of minimizing the cost of treating chronic conditions and improving the lives of millions of patients.

At RMU, we incorporate societal perspectives through active connections to patients and relevant stakeholders. We also attract, train and educate the next generation of researchers and healthcare professionals to develop and implement regenerative therapies. RMU works both nationally and across borders, participating in many international consortia. We foster open innovation and close collaboration between academia, business and government.

Building Bridges in Regenerative Medicine

Prof. Bart Spee & Prof. Jos Malda

Regenerative medicine is a relatively young field. Yet, the Utrecht community around this topic has existed for more than ten years. Jos Malda and Bart Spee talk about our unique community. 鈥淚t shows that thematically organized communities work well,鈥 Malda begins. "The close collaboration between different research groups within the Utrecht Life Sciences community is characteristic of Utrecht," Spee adds. An important aspect of this collaboration is promoting continuity. 鈥淎 smooth transfer of knowledge and ideas,鈥 Malda calls it.
