Health Economic Evaluation - Regenerative Medicines

We aim to inform decision makers – developers, clinicians, patients and policy makers – to achieve affordable, accessible and high-quality healthcare.

The Health Economic Evaluation (HEE) research group at the UMC Utrecht Julius Center and part of the Department of Epidemiology and Health Economics. Health economics is an interdisciplinary research field, which besides an emphasis on economic considerations, also includes impact of social, ethical, organizational and technical aspects. Its name may be interchangeably used with Health Technology Assessment (HTA). Although the fields are not the same, they can strongly overlap.

The value of a medical technology can be defined at different points in its life cycle. For example, in the (pre)clinical development phase (early economic evaluation), towards reimbursement assessment or post market access in the context of re-evaluation or indication expansion.

Within the HEE, we have a dedicated group specialized in health economics and HTA of regenerative medicines (RMs). RMs include cell and gene therapies, organoids, organ-on-chip, 3D-organ models and similar medical innovations. The HEE-RM team strives to increase translation of RM and (academic) gene and cell-based therapies towards implementation in healthcare services. In doing so our research focusses on payment models, development cost, (early) economic evaluations and funding/business models. With this we aim to contribute to better understanding of the fit between innovative therapies and existing development frameworks. This is not only relevant for RM but also for future biomedical innovations.
