The Pine Island Glacier and the Thwaites Glacier on West-Antarctica have been undergoing rapid changes, with potentially major consequences for rising sea levels.

Researchers have shown that most of Svalbard’s glaciers have lost their protective firn layer. The results are published in Nature Communications.

Melting ice shelves do not directly impact sea levels, but their disappearance may cause land-based ice to flow into the sea, causing sea levels to rise.
