About

The Global Cold War Group at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 studies the conflict that created our contemporary world. Combining multi-disciplinary research with a range of new perspectives and recently declassified primary sources, we seek to reconceptualise the very meaning of the Cold War and its influence on post-war history and beyond.

In conversation with a new wave of literature that aims at globalising the Cold War, our research highlights previously marginalised voices and narratives in Europe, the Global South, and beyond. Overturning the outdated view that regions within and beyond Europe were little more than pawns in the superpower game, we seek to upset established periodisations, narratives, and agencies of the Cold War.

Research topics

The expertise of our members encompasses the globe and covers a wide range of topics, including multilateral diplomacy, Pan-Africanism, the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Balkans and/or authoritarian regimes, revolutionary movements, the Warsaw Pact, grassroots activism, non-alignment, reparations, and petro-diplomacy. The Global Cold War group conducts cutting-edge multi-archival research that contributes to the best practices of New Cold War history, as well as informing policy debates and feeding into teaching at various levels.

Education

The Global Cold War Group seeks to encourage the study of the Cold War by inter alia developing research-informed courses, composing a unique textbook for advanced BA- and MA-students, and hosting the European Summer School on the Global Cold War in September 2021.

Aims

All members are part of the Cold War Research Network, founded inter alia by Laurien Crump from our group, and contribute on a regular basis. Apart from furthering research, teaching and policy debates, the Global Cold War group aims to support students and early career researchers in particular through its activities.
