Students
The biotech hub is primarily dedicated to bachelor students who are fascinated by research and want to experience working as a team in a state-of-the-art biotechnology laboratory, experiencing research in the most realistic format, from brainstorming, drafting research questions, developing ideas, and making plans, to conducting experiments, analyzing data, and writing a report in article style.
Enrollment
Bachelor students from Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy enroll for their bachelor internship with the coordinators of their own programs. Students will be able to indicate their preference for when to conduct the internship, which will be possible from period 1 to period 4. Students are given one topic of research with a concrete plan for the first 3-4 weeks. Thereafter, students and researchers co-develop the project. When possible, the three scientific areas are explored, i.e. Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy. This is an opportunity for Bachelor students to train basic skills before they enroll in master programs. Next to this, students also write their thesis in the same period, on a topic of their choice.
Deliverables
Lab report, experience poster, new protocol, and bachelor thesis.
Learning goals
Students gain insights into how scientific research works, from formulating a research question, designing experiments and write protocols, to conducting experiments, analyzing data critically and reporting it. Students learn how to discuss their research with students and staff from different disciplines in Life Sciences. Students learn to transfer knowledge to other students from different disciplines.
We expect students to develop these skills
- To work independently, as well as in a group, disciplined and systematically;
- To develop planning skills, to co-work and share equipment and facilities with peers and researchers;
- To accurately and thoroughly report in a lab journal (digital);
- To analyze collected data and be critical, relating the findings with published data;
- To locate and archive literature, to select and process literature accurately;
- To efficiently write a scientific report with article style in English and to effectively present in English
