Coen van Kuijk, Service Delivery Manager

What I like most about my job is that every day is different and we are constantly applying new technologies and methods to improve.

For me, everything is about people. Whether students, researchers or colleagues: I get my energy from working together, listening to what someone really needs and looking for solutions together.

My career at ITS began in the support department, where I started working as an external assistant. I soon discovered that I wanted to be closer to the people we supported, and when the coordinator left, I was given the opportunity to grow into a coordinating role. This new position brought me closer to my team and allowed me to get the team well on track, which enabled me to help end-users even better. This experience laid the foundation for the rest of my career.

Pursuing your ambitions

Because of my interest in connecting people and improving processes, I eventually made the switch to project management. What I appreciate is that I got opportunities not only through the support of my managers, but also by actively communicating my ambition. By making it clear that I wanted to play a connecting role, I created the space for myself to grow further.

Each step brought me closer to the users and their needs, which motivated me to develop further each time. This eventually brought me to where I am today: a role where I connect ITS and the faculties and work together to improve services.

More than just IT

As Service Delivery Manager, I am responsible for providing services to three faculties - Beta, Humanities and Rebo - as well as the university library. What I like about this job is that it is not just about keeping appointments, but about really understanding what is going on and what the faculties need.

What challenges do they face? What do they need to do their jobs to the best of their ability? That's my role: to solve problems, see opportunities and ensure that our IT services continue to meet the needs of the university.

What I take away from this is the ability to look beyond my own tasks. I am always aware of how my work contributes to the bigger picture. IT is not just about systems and processes; for me it is about supporting teaching and research, which is why I chose to work here.

Behind the Screens Success Stories

There are some projects that really stand out for me, projects that I have enjoyed working on. One example is the migration of the Google Suite to Office 365 for more than 30,000 students. This project was not only technically challenging, but also a huge communication operation. How do you make sure everyone stays well informed and the transition goes smoothly? Together with a great team, we successfully completed this challenge, and it was incredibly satisfying to see how everything fell together.

What I appreciate about this is that these projects are not always the big, visible jobs, but rather the more 'behind the scenes' projects that are often just as interesting. Another project that was perhaps less visible to users, but just as crucial for the university, was the replacement of the firewalls. These kinds of technical upgrades are essential for the security and future-proofing of our IT infrastructure. The best part? The users didn't notice a thing - and that's exactly what you want to achieve. To me, that is proof that the job was done right!

IT is all about creating opportunities

For me, IT is not just about technology, but mainly about the people we support. My career at ITS has shown me that it is about creating opportunities and connections. That focus on people has helped me not only shape my own career, but also make meaningful impact for the university. Whether it's helping students switch to new tools or ensuring that faculties can do their work optimally - everything I do contributes to the bigger picture.
