Redevelopment Buys Ballot building

The Buys Ballot building in the Utrecht Science Park is undergoing a major redevelopment. This redevelopment is necessary to improve the air quality and prepare the building for a sustainable future. Although the work may cause temporary disruption, it will ultimately create a healthier, more comfortable and energy-efficient working environment for students and staff.

Why this renovation?

The Buys Ballot building was originally built as a laboratory, but is now mainly used as a teaching and office building. The existing installations were not optimally designed for this purpose. Ventilation, in particular, left much to be desired, leading to complaints about the indoor climate. Research has shown that modification of the installations is necessary, partly to meet current sustainability and energy performance requirements.

What will change?

Various measures are being taken to make the building more sustainable and improve the indoor climate:

  • New air handling units with energy-efficient fans and heat wheels provide efficient air ventilation.
  • Installation of a modern building management system (BMS) that automatically adjusts ventilation according to occupancy, COâ‚‚ content and temperature.
  • Improvement of ventilation balance to prevent unwanted air flows and contaminated air intake.
  • Connection to Heat Cold Storage system with a heat pump, significantly reducing energy consumption.
  • Optimization of temperature control per quadrant, preventing large temperature differences within the building.

Planning and phasing

The renovation will take place in phases, per quadrant of the building. Each section will be tackled for four to five months. During the work, the quadrant in question will not be accessible due to the lack of working air treatment. Preparatory work, such as drilling tests and adjustments in the basement and on the eighth floor, will also take place.
