Anna Maria van Schurman Building Education Centre

Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ is building a special education centre in the city centre: the Anna Maria van Schurman Building. Here, the essence of the university - education, meeting and collaboration - will return to the heart of the city. With respect for history and an eye to the future, we are turning several monumental buildings into one sustainable and future-proof education building.

From historic buildings to modern education centr

The new education centre will be created by renovating the listed buildings Achter de Dom 20, 22-24 and Achter Sint Pieter 27, in combination with the demolition/new construction of Achter Sint Pieter 25, thus merging the buildings into one inviting building where students, teachers and researchers can meet and work together.

The building will enhance Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ's visibility in the city and contribute to the liveliness of the city centre. It will also become a link between the offices of the Humanities and Law, Economics, Governance and Organisation faculties, which are located in the Johanna Hudig Building and the Trans Complex.

Reference to a special person

The education centre is named after Anna Maria van Schurman (1607-1678), the first female student of the Netherlands - and possibly of Europe. She was admitted to the newly founded ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ of Utrecht in 1636. Van Schurman was an artist, linguist and theologian. The building will feature a visible element referring to her impressive life and significance.

A design for the futur

The design was created by DP6 architectuur studio, in close cooperation with consultants in sustainability, technology and landscape design. The buildings will be integrally accessible, circularly renovated and energy-efficient, so that they meet the requirements and wishes of today and tomorrow.

Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026. The building is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2027, allowing it to be put into use for education in 2028.

Future-proof accommodation

Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ invests in sustainable accommodation for education, research and meetings. This is done on the basis of the Strategic Housing Plan. By fitting out buildings more intelligently and economically, we reduce our ecological footprint and keep more room to invest in education and research.
