Alumni newsletter - June 2023

Interview met alumnus van het Jaar 2023 Eva Gonzalez Perez

Sharing Days recap

In early June, we enjoyed fantastic Sharing Days at dozens of Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 locations. Alumni, students and staff were able to test the renovated 木瓜福利影视 Museum, went to work in the Botanical Gardens, took a look behind the doors of Janskerkhof 3 or attended the inspiring Collegetour with Eva Gonz谩lez P茅rez. Not only is she well known for her crucial role as a lawyer in the Supplements Affair, she is also our Alumnus of the Year 2023. And we are proud of that.

Ralph Temmink is researching the development of methods to design and produce biodegradable structures with 3D printers for large-scale nature restoration. This approach has already been used to develop artificial reefs for the restoration of mussel and oyster beds in the Wadden Sea.

Key role of proteins in infertility

A sperm cell is well adapted for its very specific task: to deliver the male genetic material to the female egg cell. Yet the journey of a sperm cell is highly challenging: in mammals, sperm must swim distances over more than thousandfold their own length in a viscous environment.

By zooming in to near-atomic level using electron microscopy, Tzviya Zeev-Ben-Mordehai and her team were able to identify the proteins that form the molecular machinery that drives sperm motility. Zeev-Ben-Mordehai: 鈥淲e open a new era for infertility diagnostics and male contraceptive development.鈥
