Alumni newsletter - July 2021

Our university has been in the news a lot in recent weeks. The rainbow bike path, which was recently installed at Utrecht Science Park, often appeared in online timelines and on television. What does it look like? And why do we support it? You can see it in the video below. Fortunately, now that we can do more, various lustrum activities are also starting. This newsletter is therefore largely devoted to our 77th lustrum, which we celebrate together with the UMC Utrecht under the motto 'Creating tomorrow together'. With many tips for events and courses, do you still have some space left in your agenda?

Cycling across the rainbow

Hopefully, you have fond memories of it from your student days in Utrecht: The Uithof, now called the Utrecht Science Park. Now, the longest rainbow bike path in the world has been created here. College president Anton Pijpers cycled over it especially for you, together with initiator Elias van Mourik. Why are they proud of it and why is such a symbol for diversity and inclusion important?

Alumni about tomorrow

Where is your diploma? What would you do if you were the mayor of Utrecht for one week? Which hit takes you straight back to your student days? What question do you have for our scientists? Eva Gonz谩lez P茅rez, Lena Hartog, Appie Alferink and Thomas Dorlo grabbed these and many more questions from our Alumni about tomorrow ball pit. The answers? You can find them at uu.nl/alumni-tomorrow. En je leest en ziet er nog veel meer mooie interviews met UU alumni.

International attention for Utrecht's Open Science ambition

tweet on Utrecht Open Science: "It is time to end our obsession with impact factors"

Our university wants to be a pioneer in the field of Open Science. There has been a lot of international attention for the Utrecht approach in recent weeks. In a much-discussed interview on the website of , Paul Boselie (leader of the theme 'recognising and appreciating' within the Utrecht Open Science programme) says that Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 is saying goodbye to the impact factor as a criterion for recruitment and selection or promotion of individual employees. It generated a lot of positive reactions worldwide. Boslie: "Science is so much more than a Journal Impact Factor and an h-index. Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 is committed to education, research and impact for a better world. Science is not a package with a nice bow (product-ification) on the basis of which individuals are selected and evaluated."

What is floating in the Utrecht Singel?

Wooden structure Akwaglot being built in the Singel

The Singel in Utrecht has been completely round for a year now. And now a special structure is floating in it - near hotel Karel V. It is AKWAGLOT: a floating wooden platform, work of art and the landmark of our lustrum. The platform symbolises a university without walls - open to the entire community. That is why everyone can visit AKWAGLOT until November 2021. Alumni are also welcome to join the lectures, discussions and mini-concerts. Vice-dean of the Faculty of Law, Governance and Organisation Mirko Noordegraaf, co-initiator: "The university is becoming more open, more connected and wants to make more social impact. A work of art like this symbolises that. And makes encounters possible - literally and figuratively."

Contribute to equal opportunities to study in Utrecht

Visual with text: "Contribute to equal opportunities to study in Utrecht"

As an alumnus of Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, you probably still think back to your time of study at our university. Hopefully you do so with a lot of pleasure and gratitude. Unfortunately, in these times studying is not easy for everyone. A large group of students cannot count on financial support from the government or parents. That is why scholarships are so important. Scholarships give more young people the chance to realise their dreams. This is why the Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 Fund is raising funds for scholarships in this anniversary year. Help too!

It is not only the university and the UMC Utrecht that are celebrating their anniversary this year: the Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 Fund is also celebrating its birthday. For 135 years the fund has supported education and research at our university. Thanks to the unceasing support of many donors, the fund raised 3.9 million euros in 2020. What is the benefit of that money? Our students, researchers and donors can tell you in the 2020 annual report. Keeping up to date with what's happening with the Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 Fund is now also possible via

Stained glass windows in the Academy building: gift from alumni

Glas-in-lood-raam in Aula van Academiegebouw

On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 in 1936, former students donated seven stained-glass windows for the Aula in the Academy Building. The alumni awarded the commission to glazier Joep Nicolas (1897-1972). A well-known artist in the first half of the last century. At the rightmost window in the Aula, somewhat hidden behind the organ, is the text - in translation from Latin: "These glass windows were made for the 300th anniversary of the university and were donated by the alumni, for those who lived then and those who will live. Joep Nicolas f." Where the f. stands for facta: made by Joep Nicolas. Armand Heijnen delved into the history and background of these special windows and their maker for us.

Lustrum events

De eerste QR-tegel is gelegd op het Janskerkhof

This year, Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 and UMC Utrecht are celebrating 385 years of science in Utrecht. Now that the corona situation allows it, we can finally do so with a number of great activities. For students, staff, alumni and residents of the city. More than ever, we believe in learning together; in connecting questions, experience and knowledge. Because when different worlds come together, unexpected insights and groundbreaking innovations emerge.

- From 17 June to 30 November in the Utrecht Archive: the exhibition Heel Utrecht loopt uit! About how the university and the city of Utrecht in the past celebrated their lustres together exuberantly. A special piece of city history.
- With Utrecht Time Machine, Utrecht's city history is there for the taking. At thirty historical sites there will be a tile with a QR code. Scan the codes with your phone and dive into Utrecht's history.
- One question can change the world. Including your question. In the lustrum year our scientists are looking for questions that could lead to a new research, or a surprising twist in existing research. Ask your question. Online or in person. You can do so until February 2022. And thus influence the Utrecht Science Agenda.
- From 5 July to 24 August, the Summer School is organising a number of pop-up events expecially for the university anniversary. The events will start from a point in the past and take you to an unknown point in the future. Register fast, as space is limited.
- On 6 September we will celebrate the Start of the Academic Year. Save-the-date!

Alumni events

Betweter Festival: science, performance, cinima, experience

There are always nice events for alumni outside the lustrum celebrations. Sometimes they are organised especially for alumni, but be sure to check out the UU calendar <link>. Many events are free and open to alumni too. We have already made a small selection from what is on offer for the coming period.

- Have corona vaccines been tested on young people? What is the effect? What side effects do young people get? And who decides whether a child can be vaccinated? On 12 July there is a free online junior lecture 'questions about vaccines'. Expecially for secondary school students and their parents.
- MOOC's (Massive Open Online Courses) are a fun way to expand your knowledge, and they're free too! On 7 September and 2 November, there will be one on Future Food: 'Unraveling solutions for future food problems'.
- Save the date: this year's Pathways to Sustainability conference is on 14 October
- At the Betweter Festival, on Friday evening 1 October in Tivoli/Vredenburg, you will explore the world of tomorrow together with scientists and artists. Will you join us? have already started.
- It may not be an event, but it is useful for homeowners: how does your house contribute to limiting flooding caused by extreme rainfall? You can check it by using this tool, also developed by our university.
