Artificial intelligence predicts glacier development
A research team from our university has for the first time used deep learning, a form of artificial intelligence, to predict the evolution of glaciers. As a result of climate change, glaciers are rapidly losing mass. To be prepared for the future of glaciers and their impact on, for example, sea level rise, water resources and biodiversity, it is important to have a good understanding of the physical processes behind glacier changes. Glaciers evolve non-linearly over time. Deep learning provides a better understanding of this non-constant evolution, which offers advantages over traditional mathematical models. The results were published in Nature Communications at the end of January.
200 years of veterinary medicine
On 10 December 2021, the Dutch veterinary training programme will celebrate its 200th anniversary. A jubilee that will be celebrated throughout this year with all kinds of activities for employees, students, alumni and other relations. The rich history of the faculty is shown in this animation video. And on the anniversary website you will find stories, videos and the agenda with all the festivities.
Contribute to human and animal health
Veterinary researchers are increasingly working together with doctoral researchers, including from UMC Utrecht. After all, many of the same chronic diseases occur in humans and animals. This research is known as One Medicine research and it leads to better diagnostics and treatment for both. In the new Utrecht Translational One Medicine Innovation Centre (UTOMIC), the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is lifting this research to a higher level with state-of-the-art research facilities. Thanks to contributions from many people, the centre is now up and running. The Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 Fund is asking for your help for its further development. UTOMIC is one of the four charities in our fund's annual Pay it forward-campaign. Would you like to help too?
Olaf Schuiling (1932-2021)
Prof. Dr. Olaf Schuiling died in December. As professor of geochemistry and experimental petrology, he played a crucial role in the development of the field of petrochemistry at our university. Many former colleagues and former students will remember Professor Schuiling as the classic professor, who was able to come up with a scientific solution for almost every social chemical or physical problem with a geological character. After his death, (in Dutch) was published in the Volkskrant. In 2015, on the initiative of one of his first students, Henk Vrins, the Olaf Schuiling Fund was established. This named fund, part of the Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 Fund, aims to facilitate fundamental research in the field of geochemistry. Current students can apply for lab or field work.
Three generations on the stairs of the 木瓜福利影视 Hall
Three alumni, a time span of almost 60 years and a picture on the same staircase: that of our own Utrecht Academy Building. (Grand)father Wil Hackeng defended his dissertation in 1963, his son Tilman Hackeng promoted in 1993. And on 20 January it was the turn of (grand)son Wenzel Hackeng. At the Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 Medical Centre, he developed a model that enables him to find out the origin of the cancer in patients with metastases from a neuroendocrine tumour of unknown origin.
Every month, we appoint an 'Alumnus of the Month', who is announced via our social channels. Last January, there were even three.
UUnited music festival
For the third time already, Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 and Parnassos Cultural Centre will be presenting the UUnited music festival. On Thursday 24 March in TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht's student music ensembles will take to the stage, together with Dutch top artists such as Trijntje Oosterhuis, Dwight Dissels and Brigitte Kaandorp. The whole of TivoliVredenburg will be filled with different music styles. Fundraisers of the Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 Fund took care of the fundraising at cultural asset funds. The fund also contributed with a grant. Are you coming? There are still tickets left!
International Women's Day on audiotour
On 8 March it is International Women's Day. This year, Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 is treating you to an audio tour of Utrecht. You can listen to the story of our forgotten queen, Hortense de Beauharnais, follow traces of Utrecht's history of slavery and meet Nadia Comvalius, the first black woman to graduate as a doctor in Utrecht. And all this told by equally inspiring alumni and scientists. You walk the route when it suits you, alone or with a group of friends. Put on your earphones and listen. Do you live further away from Utrecht? Then just listen at home, and imagine yourself in Utrecht for a while. You can listen to the audio tour via the link below. The page will be updated soon.

Alumni events
Want to know more about current scientific research? Meet each other? Further develop yourself? There are lots of events at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视. Sometimes specially organised for alumni, but check out the UU calendar as well. Many events are free and also open to alumni. We have already made a selection from the (online) offerings for the coming period.

What can we discover when we use food as a lens to examine ourselves and the world? This spring, Studium Generale is organising three evenings with scientists who will talk about what and how we eat. Possibly with a theme dinner, tailored to the lectures. (in Dutch).
- Last chance: the exhibition 'Heel Utrecht loopt uit' about the university lustrum celebrations in the Utrecht Archive is on display until 28 February.
