Alumni newsletter - April 2022
We are pleased to send you a special edition of the email newsletter for all Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ alumni. Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ and the Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ Fund are working towards a better world for tomorrow. We do this by researching complex issues, connecting thinkers and doers and offering students and alumni a space to develop themselves. We cannot do that alone. We need the support of the whole university community!
Together we share knowledge, we give time and money to continue to work on our goals every day. To support us in our efforts we host the Sharing Days for the first time from 16 to 22 May. A week with special encounters in inspiring places with a variety of possibilities to contribute to the growth and prosperity of Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ.

Watching a film under the stars
Have you always wanted to watch a film on a big screen among exotic plants? This is your chance! On Wednesday 18 May 2022, we organise an open-air cinema in the Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ Botanic Gardens for students, alumni, staff and Utrecht citizens. While enjoying a drink, the sounds of birds and the starry sky, you imagine yourself in another world. Which film will be shown is still a surprise.
Become a Friend and win amazing prizes
The financial support of our Friends and donors is indispensable. Thanks to them we are able to provide grants and prizes to researchers and students. Moreover, these friendships enable us to continue to build a thriving university community of which alumni are an integral part.
In the days before and during the Sharing Days we have a special promotion. Become a Friend of the Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ Fund before 22 May and have a shot at some great prizes. Among the entries we raffle of 5 UU-sweaters, the collection Science x Porcelain of researcher Erik van Sebille and an all inclusive lunch for two in the garden of the Faculty Club!
Utrecht research explained in three minutes
Breaking Science is back! During the annual science communication competition, early-career researchers have just three minutes to pitch their research or a scientific concept from their field of study. Who can tell the most convincing science story of 2022?
Breaking Science is a science communication battle for young scientists organized by Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ and UMC Utrecht. We aim to help discover charismatic, up-coming researchers who can inspire you to see the world from a completely new perspective… all in a timespan of just three minutes!
Where art meets science
I Art my Science is a project that showcases the diversity of the Graduate School of Life Sciences through visual art created by our scientists. The opening event is a great moment to get inspired together, celebrate and ‘Build Bridges’ which is the theme of the exhibition.
We are pleased to welcome you to the live exhibition which will open its doors on Friday 20th of May at 16:00h in the Living Lab (1.02) at the ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ Library (USP). We will be kicking this off with an event in which art and science find a common ground to keep inspiring us in our daily life.
Syria, Afghanistan and now Ukraine: Refugee Stories
Incluusion offers refugee students the chance to further develop themselves by participating in Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ courses free of charge. In the past 5.5 years, Incluusion has supported more than 1,000 refugee students.
On Thursday May 19th 2022, we would like to show you the world of Incluusion. During this meeting, we will tell you more about our work: what have we achieved in recent years and what challenges do we face? Several former Incluusion students will share their stories and give you a personal insight into the life of a refugee.
Please bear in mind that the programme will be mostly in Dutch! Only Hamed's story will be in English.
