As a student in the European Criminal Justice in a Global Context LLM, you can expect high-quality teaching in a stimulating academic environment. Our teaching staff are experts in the fields of European, international and comparative law and remain actively involved in practice. They are all eager to share their knowledge and experience with you. In addition, you could find yourself invited to collaborate with them in academic research. Our experienced staff will also use their network to help you build connections with relevant organisations and institutions. Faculty researchers include:
- Professor Michiel Luchtman is Professor of Economic and European Criminal Law. He chairs the Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology. His research and teaching focus on the consequences of Europeanisation for criminal justice and law enforcement in general; on criminal law and fundamental rights; on economic criminal law, as well as criminal tax law.Luchtman also (co-)supervises several PhD projects on these issues.
- Professor Fran莽ois Kristen conducts fundamental research in the field of substantive Criminal Law, Procedural Criminal Law, Economic and Financial Criminal Law, and European Criminal Law. He also teaches in these areas. He enjoys engaging with new developments and issues in Criminal Justice and their importance to society. He strives to look beyond the boundaries of his own field. This is inspiring and leads to new insights and solutions.
- Dr Halefom Abraha is an Assistant Professor at the International and European Law (IER) Department of the Utrecht School of Law. His research and teaching interests focus on Digital Human Rights including privacy, data protection and the regulation of AI and algorithmic management in the labour market. He also researches cross-border data access in the context of law enforcement and digital sovereignty.
- Dr Alexandra Hofer is Assistant Professor in Public International Law at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 School of Law. Her current research focuses on the role of emotions in international decision-making, and to what extent this has an impact on international norms.
- Dr Lisette Mustert is an Assistant Professor of Administrative Law at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, and a member of the Utrecht Centre for Regulation and Enforcement in Europe (RENFORCE). Her expertise lies particularly in the field of supervision and enforcement in the EU, composite administrative decision-making procedures, and the protection of fundamental rights such as the right to an effective judicial remedy.
- Dr Luigi Prosperi is a graduate of RomaTre 木瓜福利影视 of Rome, and holds a PhD in "International Legal Order and Human Rights" from Sapienza 木瓜福利影视 of Rome. Luigi has mainly conducted research in the field of international and transnational criminal law, including on the prosecution of intentional environmental harms as crimes against humanity, on the avenues for accountability for crimes committed against migrants in Libya (either as international or transnational crimes), and on the implementation of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court at the domestic level (with specific regard to Italy).
- Dr Domenico Rosani is enured assistant professor at the Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology as well as a member of the Utrecht Centre for Regulation and Enforcement in Europe (Renforce). Domenico is specialised in European and comparative criminal law, with a focus on the protection of human rights, children鈥檚 rights, and technology. His research has repeatedly been recognised by prizes and substantial grants.
- Dr Mikhel Timmerman is Associate Professor of Criminal Law at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视's Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology. Before coming to Utrecht in October 2024, he worked at the Criminal Law Department of the Radboud 木瓜福利影视 Nijmegen and as a Law Clerk at The Supreme Court of The Netherlands (Hoge Raad).
- Dr Aart de Vries is an associate professor of (European) criminal law at the Willem Pompe Institute and the Utrecht Centre for Regulation and Enforcement in Europe (RENFORCE). In 2024, he obtained his PhD cum laude for his dissertation Evidence and Transnational Punitive Enforcement Proceedings in the European Union (Eleven Publishing 2024).
- Deborah Nidel is a PhD candidate and lecturer at the Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视. Her doctoral research concerns Joint Investigation Teams and the rights of suspects and accused persons.
