The academic faculty at Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ School of Economics (U.S.E.) represents internationally recognised expertise in Economics disciplines including causal inference, behavioural economics, sustainability and the labour market impacts of technological change. They are happy to share their knowledge and might invite you to assist in their research. Our staff will also use their networks to help you connect to professional organisations and institutions that interest you.
The core team involved in the Economics and Data Analysis programme include:
- Joyce Delnoij – Assistant Professor of Microeconomics. She is a behavioural game theorist and experimental economist, working on a variety of topics related to online marketplaces (for instance, auctions and the sharing economy), sustainable decision making (including the protein and energy transition) and interpersonal preferences (such as honesty, trust and social norms). Joyce teaches the course Microeconomics of Contemporary Challenges and is a programme coordinator.
- Sabrina Genz – Assistant Professor in Labour Economics. Sabrina’s primary research focus is in labour economics, with current projects examining the labour market effects of technological change, job polarisation and occupational tasks. She teaches the course Analysis of Current Challenges and is a programme coordinator.
- Maarten Goos - Full Professor of Economics and Institutions. Maarten's award-winning research focuses on labour markets, including technological progress, labour market intermediation, inequality and institutions. He is involved in the course Analysis of Current Challenges.
- Kris de Jaegher – Associate Professor of Economics. A large part of Kris’s recent research investigates the circumstances enabling people to undertake collective action or form mutually beneficial networks, such as an outside threat or common enemy. He is involved in the course Microeconomics of Contemporary Challenges.
- Sönke Matthews - Assistant Professor of Applied Economics. His research applies quasi-experimental econometric methods to questions about the economics of education and labour economics. More specifically, he studies how features of school systems, such as ability tracking and vocational curricula, shape students’ educational achievement, labour market outcomes and inequality therein. Sönke teaches the courses Data Science and Analysis for Economists and Policy Evaluation Skills (Research Project).
- Inge van den Bijgaart – Associate Professor of Economics. Inge’s research specialises in the economics of environmental policy, and climate policy in particular. Inge teaches the core elective course Environmental Economics and Policy.
The programme is also well-connected to Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ’s strategic theme, Institutions for Open Societies, and the Future of Work Hub. The Master's programme in Economics and Data Analysis is fully aligned with U.S.E.'s vision of providing education from a real-world perspective, as social relevance is central to our programme. Teaching is small-scale, student-centred and integrated with research, with all new courses aligning with U.S.E.'s research profile.
