Extended Reality (XR) – Space

Utrecht ľϸӰ is devoted to exploring and implementing the benefits of Extended Reality (XR) technologies in education and research. This devotion is based on the growing relevance of XR in today's society and the opportunities these technologies offer in various fields of academia.

XR is a rapidly emerging new technology. Within several faculties, lecturers are experimenting with the use of XR in teaching to enrich and support the student learning process. Based on the ambition to create “inspiring and challenging learning environments” (strategic plan 2025), XR initiatives are being stimulated, supported and researched.

Within the UU-wide project “Extended Reality”, we are investigating how to enable a sustainable and broad infrastructure within UU for the development, implementation, research and evaluation of XR technologies in education. Realizing an XR space in collaboration with FLS is part of this project.

Intended result

The establishment of a physical learning environment for XR education will allow us to explore, through experimentation and evaluation, which facilities in a space can best support XR education and how they should be organized and embedded.

We are currently developing two teaching spaces for XR education. One space (ANDRO O.025) is designated as an area for students to engage with VR or AR applications, selected by teachers to be included in a rotational program. The space will have four playing fields where four students can rotate through a VR or AR application. Outside the designated playing areas, there will be suitable space for teachers and fellow students to observe from.

The adjoining room (ANDRO O.028) will be set up as a teaching space, with room for instruction before or after the teaching activity or for simultaneous viewing.

Where does the project stand currently?

The project is currently in the realization phase. In collaboration with students, lecturers and colleagues from C&F Audiovisual, ideas and input have been worked out. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has made two rooms available in the Androclus building (Yalelaan 1) where XR teaching can be booked.
