Dr. Nathan Meershoek is Assistant Professor at Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ School of Law. As a researcher he is affiliated with UUCePP (Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ Centre for Public Procurement) and RENFORCE (Utrecht Centre for Regulation and Enforcement in Europe).
He defended his PhD thesis ‘’ on the 12th of June 2023 and received his doctorate degree cum laude. In his PhD research he focused on EU regulation and (industrial) policy in the area of military industries. More specifically, he examined how the EU should regulate military procurement within the constitutional framework of the EU Treaties and the political and economic context of military power. In 2025, Routledge will publish his book, which builds on his doctoral research .
In his current research, Nathan Meershoek looks at different types of legal questions concerning EU involvement in defence, military industries and the EU's ambition of strategic autonomy in a broader sense. In addition, his research focuses on national security risks in a public procurement context.
In earlier research he addressed the legal tensions between EU public procurement law and the EU’s aim of establishing a social market economy and excessive prices of medicines in light of EU competition law. He also contributed to advisory work and research reports commissioned by public organisations such as the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Dutch Ministry of Defence and the Dutch National Police.
