Irina van Aalst is Urban Geographer. Her research is positioned at the intersection of urban and cultural geography. She publishes and supervises PhD candidates on topics such as urban public spaces, nightlife, growing up in the city and American cities. In a recent project, Van Aalst collaborated with social scientists and humanities academics to develop a toolkit for creative methods to map and analyse urgent urban issues, together with societal partners towards (more) .
Van Aalst teaches in the Master's programme Urban and Economic Geography. She is Faculty Ambassador for Community Engaged Learning and is project leader of Lab in de Stad/ Citylab, a platform in which students, lecturers, and partner organisations in Utrecht co-create solutions to pressing societal challenges and work and learn together in and with the city. Besides that, she is a member of the Supervisory Board of architectural centre in Utrecht and the chair of the STOGO foundation.
