Annual Pathways to Sustainability Conference
Our annual conference is an inspirational day that brings to the stage the voices, experiences, ambitions and concerns of a diverse range of actors from within and outside academia, and across generations and cultures. The conference is a crossover; between different groups of scholars, between the university and a variety of stakeholders, between science and culture, and between global North and Global South. Take a look at the wrap-ups of previous conferences for inspiration.
The next Pathways to Sustainability Conference will take place in 2026!
28 November 2024 - At Home?
The 2024 Conference centered around the question 鈥淎t Home?鈥, sparking critical dialogue on climate, justice, and belonging. With keynotes by feminist geographer Kathryn Yusoff and Dutch climate envoy Jaime de Bourbon de Parme, interactive sessions, and artistic interventions, the event offered fresh perspectives on what it means to feel at home in a changing world, and how to shape sustainable futures together. We look back on a great conference and hope to inspire you a bit more!
4 April 2023 - See the future
The 2023 Conference invited participants to imagine a sustainable 2060 and reflect on the transformations needed to get there, as well as the big shifts that we must consider. With inspiring keynotes, creative performances, interactive installations, and in-depth breakout sessions, the day sparked fresh perspectives on research, collaboration, and action for a just and sustainable future. Together we looked back, pieced together and learned. What do the changes that we were able to bring about look like? What/who were the crucial triggers for this transformation? And did we (or better: who did) see them coming in 2023?
2021: Making Change Happen
The 2021 Conference focused on driving real-world change with inspiring keynotes by Mariana Mazzucato, Val茅rie Masson鈥慏elmotte, and Edgar Pieterse. Across the week-long programme, participants engaged in diverse activities ranging from gamified learning to circular economy workshops and flood risk scenarios, culminating in a day of plenary talks, breakout sessions, and recognition of impactful sustainability initiatives. How can fundamental change of the magnitude needed to avoid climate breakdown be realized? This conference brought together the voices, experiences, ambitions and concerns from a wide range of actors.
Conference 2020: Accelerating the Transformation
How do we speed up the sustainability transition? Just prior to the outbreak of the corona crisis in Europe, scientific director of Pathways to Sustainability Prof Maarten Hajer took us on a journey into accelerating the sustainability transformation during the 2020 Conference. Now that we are all in a 鈥榮urplace鈥 and all our daily routines are broken and need to be reinvented, we can experience this journey together online. Be inspired by the multimedia story of the exchange of world leading experts with the 500 participants of the third Pathways to Sustainability Conference.
