Educational Worldview Journey

worldview journey concept

Led by Annick De Witt and researchers from UU, this Seed awarded project aimed to pilot a transformative learning aproach called the Educational Worldview Journey.

This approach consists of short but deep learning journeys (of ± 4 – 6 hours each) that invite students to reflect on their worldviews (explore), communicate with those with other worldviews (exchange), and include nature and the planet into their worldviews (expand). It uses a range of different learning methods, from video lectures and journaling to experiential learning activities and deep dialogue.

Students have overwhelmingly to the personal reflection that this approach invites for, as well as the deep dialogues amongst peers that it facilitates.

The approach is grounded in the theory of transformative learning and is therefore not merely focused on the content (or object) of study but includes a critical exploration of the (subjective) perspectives from which one engages any object of study. It invites learners to question their habits of thought through critical reflection, perspective-taking, and open discourse, while inviting for perspective-shifts that allow one to see a situation, phenomenon, or the world at large, in a new and qualitatively different way.

This project has resulted in multiple academic publications, including:

  • of the transformative learning cycle used in this approach
  • of the design process of developing this approach
  • A study of the dialogue practice used in this approach ().

Eduators are invited to use the program in their own education and trainings, by taking part in a , which will also give them access to the high quality learning materials and platform developed for this approach.
