3D Design - Autodesk Fusion
Join us for an engaging and hands-on session where you'll dive into the essentials of Autodesk Fusion. This workshop is designed to walk you through the core tools of 3D design, allowing you to create a fully parametrically defined part. We’ll cover everything from basic sketches and constraints to more advanced features like dimensioning and parameter-driven designs.

What to Expect During the Workshop:
This workshop is designed to be interactive and engaging, providing you with hands-on experience in 3D design. Here’s an overview of what you’ll be doing in each of the two sessions:
Introductory level
In the first session you will get familiar with the 3D modelling software AutoDesk Fusion. We'll explore the core tools for 3D design, including:
Sketching: Learn how to create and manipulate 2D sketches, which serve as the foundation for 3D models.
Constraints: Apply geometric and dimensional constraints to control the relationships between different elements of your sketch.
Dimensioning: Accurately size and scale your design elements using precise measurements.
Parameter-driven design: Understand how to set parameters for your designs, enabling quick updates and design modifications by simply adjusting key dimensions.
Advanced level
In this second session you will learn more advanced features, enabling you to use parametric design more efficiently. Topics include:
Multi-component design: Create designs consisting of multiple parts.
History and versioning: Selectively roll back changes without altering other aspects of the design.
Configurable designs: One design can contain multiple variations.
Global parameters: Reuse parameters to make your design more robust and faster to iterate.
Importing existing designs: Editing imported (mesh) models.
In each session you'll get hands-on with Fusion, applying what you’ve learned by creating a fully parametrically defined part from start to finish. We’ll guide you step-by-step through the process of transforming a concept into a precise digital model. Whether you have a specific idea or you’re exploring a new concept, this workshop will help you bring it to life.
Tips for Great Designs:
We’ll discuss the qualities that make a design stand out, such as functionality, manufacturability, and aesthetics. By understanding these principles, you’ll be better equipped to create designs that not only look good but also work well in the real world.
Interactive Learning Environment:
This workshop is highly interactive, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and get feedback from the instructor. You’ll be able to troubleshoot challenges in real-time and apply your new skills to practical design scenarios.
You’ll also have the chance to collaborate with fellow participants, share ideas, and learn from each other’s experiences.
Workshop Goals:
By the end of the Introductory Level you'll be able to:
Navigate your way around Fusion
Make accurate 2D sketches
Select the most efficient strategy to design your idea
Create single-component design that is fully parametrically defined. This means every aspect of your design will be precisely controlled by dimensions and constraints, making it adaptable and easy to modify.
Exporting your design for use in e.g. 3D printing
By the end of the Advanced Level you'll be able to:
Efficiently work with multiple, interlocking components.
Master more advanced tools that are essential for creating complex 3D models.
Import existing designs and be able to modify them.
The skills you'll acquire in this session will form a solid foundation for more complex designs and 3D modeling tasks, empowering you to work on your own design projects with confidence.
What You’ll Need to Bring:
To fully participate in the workshop, please ensure you bring the following:
A laptop (Windows or Mac) with Autodesk Fusion pre-installed.
You can obtain a if you're a student or educator (follow the external link provided to sign up for a license).
Make sure your system meets the for running the software (refer to the external link for detailed specifications).
A mouse—while it’s possible to use a trackpad or touchscreen, designing becomes far easier and more efficient with a traditional mouse.
Optional: An idea for a part you'd like to design. If you have a specific project in mind, this workshop is the perfect opportunity to begin developing your concept.
Experience Required:
For the Introductory Level no experience with 3d modelling is required. All we expect is an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a bit of curiosity! We do require you to install Fusion in advance and have a look around in the program.
The Advanced Level can be attended after attending the Introductory Level session, or if you already proficient in Fusion and looking for some advanced tips and tricks.
