Two new volumes have been published in the Utrecht Series on Language and Communication: ‘The Riches of Intercultural Communication’, edited by Roselinde Supheert, Gandolfo Cascio and Jan ten Thije. Together, the two publications provide an overview of the research underlying the UU Master’s programme in Intercultural Communication.

Intercultural Communication

The two volumes are not a handbook. The contributions present research projects within five approaches to intercultural communication: interaction approach, contrastive approach, cultural representational approach, multilingualism approach and transfer approach including research on intercultural competencies.

Most authors are affiliated to the Master’s programme in Intercultural Communication at Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ. Although the scope of the volumes is broad,  there is a clear common denominator and that is the social urgency of scholarly attention for linguistic and cultural diversity and the need to make concrete contributions, however modest, to inclusion and mutual intelligibility in a world confronted with injustice based on discrimination, (institutional) racism, and sexism, globalisation and postcolonial heritage.

Linguistic and cultural diversity

With the choice of the term ‘riches’ in the title of this book, the editors want to express that research into linguistic and cultural diversity may not only contribute to the reduction of unjust human relations, but also has its own added value in creating and exposing new connections, relationships, identities and communities through intercultural communication.

The editors hope that these volumes can inspire professionals, researchers, students and alumni in the field of Intercultural Communication.
