Lara den Hartog Jager at Museum Catharijne Convent, Utrecht

For five weeks, I worked at the Research & Library department, where I assisted curator Lieke Wijnia in researching the Museum’s modern and contemporary art collection.

Museum Catharijneconvent is located in a former cloister and preserves the largest collection of Christian art and artifacts in the Netherlands. With their collection as a foundation, the museum aims to examine the role that Christianity - and religion in a wider sense - plays in our society, in the past as well as now and in the future.

The collection largely consists of medieval art, however one of the ³¾³Ü²õ±ð³Ü³¾â€™s recent goals is to collect and exhibit more modern and contemporary art. For this purpose, it is important to know which contemporary works are currently part of the collection and how they could be combined with other works and themes. My internship focused largely on this task: I made a selection of all the relevant works in the modern and contemporary period, researched each object and tried to categorize it into one of the new presentation themes.

I was very lucky to be able to work at the museum itself for several days each week. This allowed me to search for information in the library, talk to colleagues, wander through the museum and look at all the objects on display in real life, which made the experience extra dynamic.

My research gave insight into the contemporary works that are currently part of the ³¾³Ü²õ±ð³Ü³¾â€™s collection, and ways in which they can be merged with the rest of the collection in the future. This will hopefully contribute to the process of presenting a more diverse and contemporary view on Christian heritage at the museum.
