"Together with my team, I ensure a safe and healthy working environment for 1,000 colleagues."
In 2002, Ruud started his career at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in a research group. But along the way he discovered what he really liked: being in contact with people and making sure they can work in a safe and healthy environment. He followed a training course and entered the field. Ruud now leads the Safety team and is happy to tell you more about it.
What exactly does your team do?
‘We monitor the health and safety of all our colleagues. That's almost 1,000 people. With a team of health, safety and environmental coordinators and biological safety specialists, we create an environment in which all colleagues can perform their work safely and healthily.’
What makes health and safety at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine different from other places?
‘The unique environment! We have a farm, an animal hospital, laboratories, offices, a pathology department and teaching facilities. As a result, occupational hazards come in many shapes and sizes. Colleagues work with chemicals and come into contact with viruses and bacteria. Dealing with sick animals is also an issue. You cannot say to a horse, parrot or cow: ‘Please sit still’. So an animal care professional is always present. The challenge for us is to keep all these different activities safe for everyone.’
It always starts with the people themselves. Think of it as driving a car: you need a driver’s license and a safe car, but it's up to you, as the driver, to buckle up and drive safely.
What do colleagues notice about your efforts?
‘That varies from person to person. All colleagues are equally important and can come to us if they have questions or a complaint. An animal care professional who suffers from physical strain, a lab technician working with hazardous substances or the director with a question about the office workplace. Our help can be very divers. Sometimes we give advice on ergonomic aids. And other times we point out the risks for people who want to have children. We also promote safety awareness among employees and managers. It always starts with the people themselves. Think of it as driving a car: you need a driver’s license and a safe car, but it's up to you, as the driver, to buckle up and drive safely.’
How do you keep your knowledge up to date?
‘Within the university, there is a wide network of people in our position. Together we discuss cases and keep up with changes in laws and regulations. I am also a member of the professional association, where I exchange experiences and knowledge with peers throughout the Netherlands. This allows us to share our expertise.
And finally, how do you experience the work culture within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine?
‘As very pleasant. There is a lot of room for individual growth. And what I like best is that many people like to talk about their work with passion. You suddenly hear about a tiger lying on the section table. You only experience that with us!’
