Department of Psychology

The Department of Psychology stands for leading research and teaching in the field of human behaviour. There are four sub-departments, each with its own expertise:

Through our research and teaching, we contribute to understanding human thought and action, promoting mental health, improving interpersonal relationships and addressing societal challenges. Our field is essential for creating a healthy and inclusive society.

Research

In the overarching programme “Navigating a complex world”, we investigate how people find their way and make choices in a world full of challenges. This research is more topical than ever and we do it together with the Department of Methodology & Statistics.

Our research focuses on three key questions:

  1. How do people perceive and process their social and physical environment?
  2. How do self-image and social identity influence engagement with society?
  3. How do people align their behaviour with societal expectations and personal goals?

To achieve our research goals, we invest in a strong, inspiring research environment in which young talents and experienced researchers contribute to knowledge and impact. We conduct both fundamental and applied research and value quality over quantity. We value creative, lasting connections between people and ideas and place a high value on open science. Moreover, our researchers can use a wide range of labs with extensive support.

Our research is closely linked to two strategic themes of Utrecht ľϸӰ - Dynamics of Youth and Institutions for Open Societies - and with the university's focus areas Applied Data Science, Higher Education Research and Human-centered Artificial Intelligence. Our PhD students' research takes place in several Dutch research schools: CAS Child and Adolescent Studies, the , the and EPP Research.

Researchers meet at the Linschoten lectures: a series of lectures in which substantive and social issues are highlighted from the different perspectives of our sub-departments. Non-psychologists are also welcome to attend.

Education

Our students can count on challenging, activating and personal education that connects to current social issues.

In the broad bachelor's degree programme in Psychology, we prepare students for their later role as academic professionals. Much attention is paid to the application of psychological knowledge and skills to social issues, and to the interdisciplinary approach that is often needed to address these issues. Teaching content is linked to the overarching research theme “Navigating a complex world”.

For further in-depth study, students can visit our master's programmes:

Our lecturers are also involved in various clinical continuing education programmes (RINO) and education for professionals (summer schools).

We pay great attention to the quality and development of our teaching team to provide high-quality education. Our lecturers are both researchers and (clinical) professionals. They are all trained to teach in higher education. We also encourage our lecturers to develop further through the many opportunities available, both within the faculty and through the Centre for Academic Teaching and Learning. Teaching innovation is paramount in our department.
