According to Leoniek Wijngaards-de Meij, Utrecht ľ�ϸ���Ӱ�� is not a reflection of the city of Utrecht or of Dutch society. UU attracts a homogeneous group of students and falls behind in terms of diversity compared to other Dutch universities. But she approaches these arrears positively: “We can learn a lot from others.”

Learning from and by diversity

As Wijngaards-de Meij believes that students learn more when they study alongside students who do not look like them, she monitors the applications, enrolments and the study successes of UU students. “It's important to see where we are currently standing.” For this purpose, she spends time with a national group of researchers who meet regularly to exchange experiences regarding research on other universities.

Attract and excel

This way, Wijngaards-de Meij hopes to learn, among other things, how to attract diverse groups of students as a university and how to then offer them the education that enables them to excel. “I think there is much to gain.”
