Towards cultural change

Rectorate writes book together with academic community

Giving back more to society. This is the essence of the big cultural change in academia today: Open Science. But what does this mean for the way universities (should) develop? Rector magnificus Henk Kummeling, vice-rector of Teaching & Learning Manon Kluijtmans and former vice-rector of Research Frank Miedema address this question intensively in the book The 木瓜福利影视 in Transition, calling on the help of the academic community.

Before starting the writing process, the authors widely gathered input from staff, students, alumni and external interested parties, among others. It resulted in a first digital preprint edition of the book, that was accompanied by (again) the invitation to people to share their feedback, comments and insights. Based on the input gathered, there is now a final version which, apart from digital (open access), is also available on paper; in both Dutch and English.

Manon Kluijtmans: Of course, the invitation to respond still fully stands. The aim of the book is to stimulate the conversation and thus to initiate developmentsWith the book we do not only aim at readers in universities, Frank Miedema adds, but also at interested parties in society, in governments, business and not-for-profit sectors who want to better understand the origins and dynamics of current developments in academia.

Studio interview on the book The 木瓜福利影视 in Transition

Following the release of the first digital version of the book, just before summer 2023, the authors explained more about the book and the writing process in a studio interview.

International interest

Miedema, Kluijtmans and Kummeling are pleasantly surprised by the amount of positive feedback - including internationally - they received on the first version of the book. Although the feedback did not lead to adjustments of the main outline, it was often useful, for example, to go yet a step further or to give more interpretation, says Manon Kluijtmans.

For a cultural shift towards Open Science as we envisage it, it is crucial to share this vision widely around the world and to work together.

When we started writing, we mainly had a Dutch audience in mind. But we soon noticed that there is also a lot of interest internationally. For a cultural shift towards Open Science as we envisage it, it is crucial to share this vision widely around the world and to work together. In research, there are already important developments in this field internationally, but for education and organisation, the discussion on Open Science has only just started. Therefore, we frequently  discuss this with international partners, and the book can play an important role in putting the topic on the agenda
