OUP open access caps expected to be reached in October
The open access (OA) publication caps for Oxford ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ Press (OUP) journals, covering both hybrid and gold OA journals, are projected to be reached by October. This affects researchers who want to publish here.
What are the consequences?
When the caps are met, articles submitted to hybrid OUP journals can still be published free of charge, but only as ‘closed access’ behind the paywall. This does not extend to gold OA journals, where costs to publish OA (APC) would be covered directly by authors. You will receive a personal invoice for these costs.
What can you do?
Did you submit your article for open access publication in an Oxford ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ Press (OUP) journal? And do you expect that your manuscript is accepted between the end of October and the end of December 2025? Then we advise you to look for other financing options.
Have you not submitted your manuscript yet? Consider waiting until 2026, when new agreements may be entered into.
You can also choose a journal from another publisher. Check the to find OA publishers.
Are you planning to publish in a hybrid journal? Then publishing for free via the green open access route (Taverne) might be possible. This way, your closed published article will be OA available in the 6 months after publication. Check your funder requirements to see if these are met when you publish open access after 6 months. Please note that green open access is not possible for publishing in gold open access journals.
Does your research have external funding?
Some researchers make use of external funding to execute their research, from which the grants have allocated money that can be used to pay for the OA costs (APC). We kindly request these researchers to use these funds to pay for the OA costs. This way, other researchers without (external) funding, are given the opportunity to use the OA agreement with the publisher before the cap has been reached.
Other caps reached
Please note that other publishers might also reach their caps soon. On and when they are expected to reach their cap. In the you will also find which OA deals have caps and which have not.

About open access deals
Dutch universities, university medical centres and KNAW institutes have agreed with certain publishers that a certain number of articles can be published OA every year with (up to 100%) discount. These open access deals will reach their caps when the maximum number of articles is published with this discount. Read more about these deals on our page on open access funding.
