Jo茫o Trabucho Alexandre nominated for Teacher Awards Geosciences 2019-2020

Every year, the Faculty of Geosciences awards two Teacher Awards. The aim of the award is to stimulate teaching excellence and appreciate teachers because of their merits for education at the faculty. Jo茫o Trabucho Alexandre, member of the Utrecht Young Academy, has been nominated as Teacher of the Year of the Faculty of Geosciences for the second time.

Jo茫o has been nominated in the category of teachers with more than 5 years of teaching experience in an academic setting. 鈥淛o茫o motivates and inspires our students and stands out because of his clear vision on education and his initiatives in the field of educational innovation and improvement.鈥 In addition to his teaching and learning activities, Jo茫o has been actively involved in the redesign of the Earth Sciences bachelor鈥檚 program.

Higher education should be focused on organizing activities that are likely to result in students seeing the world in new and previously inaccessible ways. The role of the teacher is to organize those activities and to encourage students to cross the threshold.

The other nominees within the category Teacher of the Year are Ellen Moors (Sustainable Development) and Gery Nijenhuis (Social Geography and Planology). The winners will be announced in May, the time and place of the awards ceremony is yet to be determined. The winner will receive a prize consisting of 1500 euros to be spent on work-related matters, such as a study trip or books.
