Horizon Europe grants for research projects into structural racism and discrimination
Marcel Lubbers, a Professor of 鈥業nterdisciplinary Social Science: Relations between groups and cultures鈥 at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, has gained a grant with a big consortium. With this grant of almost 3 million euros, the consortium wants to spend the next four years investigating what impact structural racism has on societies.
In structural racism, there is an exclusion of certain groups of people within society that continues to exist because of the way society and institutions function. Lubbers says: 鈥淭his causes a structural disadvantage for a group of people, solely based on matters like ethnic background.鈥
Equality
One of the things the Utrecht professor wants to find out with his project (entitled: Recognition and acknowledgement of injustice to strengthen equality, RAISE for short) is to what extent people acknowledge the existence of structural racism. 鈥淗opefully, we can then take actions that provide more insight into structural racism and eventually make a contribution to equality with those.鈥
Lubbers鈥 project is front and centre in generating new insights on structural racism in Europe.
Collaborating with NGOs
Lubbers stands for an interdisciplinary approach. 鈥淲e're going to do this with various researchers. Think along the lines of social psychologists, theologians, geographers, political scientists, economists, big-data scientists and sociologists.鈥 Within the project, the academics will collaborate with NGOs which deal with racism and hatred of foreigners in precarious contexts (such as NGOs from Hungary, Poland and T眉rkiye). According to the grant provider, Lubbers鈥 project is 鈥渇ront and centre in generating new insights on structural racism in Europe.鈥
Also grant for EQUALSTRENGTH
Within the same call, called Strengthening ethnic, racial and religious equality, the project EQUALSTRENGTH has also been granted. In this project, of which 木瓜福利影视 College Dublin is the coordinating university, the Utrecht Associate Professor Valentina Di Stasio participates. With the project, the academics are going to investigate cumulative and structural forms of discrimination. The emphasis will be on obstructions in access to job opportunities, housing and child care. In this, the researchers will concentrate on prejudices and hate crimes against ethnic, racial and religious minorities.
