Four new Senior Fellows, Centre for Academic Teaching appointed
As of 1 September 2020, four new Senior Fellows will be appointed by the Executive Board: Theo van Haeften (Veterinary Medicine), Jeroen Janssen (Social Sciences), Annet van Royen (Medicine) and Bald de Vries (REBO).
During their Senior Fellowship, they work on a faculty and/or university-wide project to further improve education, dedicate themselves to teacher development and deepen their knowledge in the field of educational science. In doing so, they contribute to contextual knowledge of higher education. Successful completion of the programme will culminate in a nomination for a position as full professor with a special emphasis on education. A further introduction of our new Senior Fellows follows below.
The new Senior Fellows
Theo van Haeften, is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and is considered to be a very dedicated scholar with a teaching profile and strongly committed to improvement and innovation of the veterinary curriculum. As a director of the undergraduate school of the faculty, he is already in a key position to initiate and implement changes. Theo is also one of driving forces behind a long-desired collaboration with Wageningen ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ. His teaching philosophy is based on student-centric learning with a strong focus on how to design assessment in an optimal learning environment. Theo is highly motivated to implement programmatic assessment in the veterinary curriculum. He expects that the Senior Fellow programme will give him the opportunity to work in the forefront of educational innovation, to do research and publish about it.
Jeroen Janssen is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. He is highly qualified both in the field of research and in the field of teaching, the latter among other things evidenced by numerous teaching awards. His research in the domain of educational sciences focuses on collaborative learning, self-regulative learning and computer-supported learning. As a director of Education of both the bachelor’s and master’s programme Educational Sciences, he has experience in educational leadership. Jeroen is devoted to bring research and education together and to drive change. He is highly motivated to conduct a project on supporting First-Generation Students before the start of their studies to foster students’ sense of belonging at Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ. His well-informed vision of teaching and learning combined with his educational leadership skills give confidence that he can carry out his project successfully. Jeroen will bring his enthusiasm and his background in educational sciences to the programme.
is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine. She is an experienced clinician scientist with a strong record in education, research and academic patient care. She is a committed teacher and very passionate about training doctors to be prepared for future challenges. In her current position as programme coordinator of SUMMA she has validated many innovations in the curriculum, especially interdisciplinary collaborations with TU/e and Wageningen university, several faculties of UU in particular the faculty of Humanities, the ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ College and HKU ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ of the Arts. The committee is impressed by her strong scientific background combined with extensive experience in education. Her mission is to educate students as creative thinkers in an interdisciplinary context, in order to face complex problems in health care. She aims to implement a challenge-based approach where more open-ended assignments allow students to develop creativity.
Bald de Vries is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance. He is regarded as a highly talented researcher at his faculty, a committed and passionate teacher and has ample experience in the area of education and educational innovation. He is one of the initiators of blended learning at his faculty. As a director of Education of the Bachelor’s Law Programme, he had already a broad network within the university, being an active member of the university wide network of directors of Education. Bald has made his priority to improve interdisciplinary education and to establish a more inclusive learning environment. Bald has a strong mission to change the mindset of students, to educate them as bridge builders as well to stimulate his colleagues to cross disciplinary boundaries in order to address complex societal issues and problems. The committee believes that Bald will bring a lot of experience in educational innovation and leadership to the programme as well as his passion and enthusiastic engagement that will inspire colleagues.
More about the Senior Fellow Programme
With the Senior Fellow Programme Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ aims to strengthen educational leadership within the Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ by increasing the number of professor with emphasis on education. The programme contributes to the visible appreciation for education and teaching and shows career steps in education are possible. The programme also aims to promote innovation in teaching and learning and to increase the overall quality of education.
The programme is renewed in 2017 and renamed in Senior Fellow Programme (formerly Teaching Fellow Programme). With these three new appointments, 10 Senior Fellows currently take part in the Programme. Teaching staff can only be nominated by the dean of their faculty. The Executive Board has appointed an international selection committee to advise on the appointments.
