Academic knowledge is not neutral: how can we deal with this in educational practices?
Toolbox Diversity in Education launched
After more than one and a half years an exciting moment has arrived for the project of Kathrine van den Bogert, Elke Linders and Nicole Sanches: the is ready to go. With the support of the Utrecht Education Incentive Fund (Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences) they have created a toolbox which offers teachers practical information and exercises to include the theme of diversity in higher education.
The aim of this project was to develop a toolbox for university lecturers and teachers that offers tools to integrate diversity in an innovative and concrete manner into our educational practices. The overall goal is to create a more inclusive environment in which students with diverse backgrounds and positions can recognize themselves.
The toolbox consists of an introduction, theoretical approaches, four tools and finally examples and best practices. The tools offer accessible and practical exercises in the field of critical reading, critical self positioning, literature and dialogues in the classroom. All information is available in both English and Dutch.
The content of the toolbox is based on three theoretical pillars: unlearning, decoloniality and intersectionality. Unlearning is a way to reflect on existing habits, biases, and assumptions in (academic) thinking. Decoloniality is the process of understanding how the production of academic knowledge is influenced by our colonial history and its ongoing legacy. Intersectionality is the notion that various forms of discrimination reinforce each other and therefore need to be understood in relation to each other.
Kathrine, Elke and Nicole work at the department of Cultural Anthropology of Utrecht 木瓜福利影视. During the project they have been supported by Nathalie Veenendaal (Educational Consultancy and Professional Development) and Jasper Albinus (student assistant sept. 2017-feb. 2018)
