Below, you will find an overview of courses from the current academic year of this Master's. This overview is meant to give you an idea of what to expect. The course offer may change in the coming academic year.
General programme
In a variety of courses in the Clinical Psychology programme, you will study relevant theoretical models, concepts and themes and the associated empirical findings. You will learn to make an independent contribution to problem analyses, diagnosis and psychotherapeutic treatment of psychological problems and disorders. You will work towards becoming a scientist-practitioner, applying critical scientific thinking in concrete situations of mental health and illness. By completing the Academic Professional course you prepare for your future job.
Internship and Master鈥檚 thesis
Both the internship and the Master's thesis are required courses, but you can choose in which semester you start them. The internship (for the clinical experience) and thesis (research) are two different things.
You will do an internship in clinical practice or in a research organisation. Most students opt to do an internship in the practice of mental healthcare. You can also do an internship with a research or policy focus. The clinical internship* is often outside the university; research internships are often done at the department. While conducting your thesis research and writing your thesis, you will gain considerable experience in designing and carrying out an empirical study and reporting your results.
* Students are facilitated as much as possible by the department in finding a place to do their internship, but you are responsible for finding a suitable place to conduct your internship. English-language clinical internships are very scarce in the Netherlands and if you do not master the Dutch language sufficiently you are invited to find a suitable place for doing your internship abroad.
