Symposium: Building a new life in a new language
How does the daily stress of refugee parents affect their way of parenting? How well can children learn a new language if they have experienced war trauma? This symposium brings together linguists, educational scholars and psychologists studying the challenges of growing up as a refugee. Join us to think about how we can use language as a bridge to a new life.
Going to school and learning a new language is a challenge for many refugee children. Should students work in Dutch as much as possible? That is not the best solution, believes linguistic scholar Elena Tribushinina. Instead, research shows that support in children's mother tongue plays an important role in shaping school performance, language skills and wellbeing. This includes recognising and valuing one's own language and identity.
The research by Elena Tribushinina, Anna Rijkers, Nataliia Rekonvald and Hanna Tryfonova on language support for Ukrainian refugee pupils is only one part of the programme. Together, experts from different backgrounds will reflect on the possibilities for tailor-made support.
