Dr Jo茫o Trabucho Alexandre: "Adventures in the Exotic Terrane of Wrangellia, Southcentral Alaska"

The geology of Southcentral Alaska and its exotic terranes is fascinating, and geological fieldwork in the remote wilderness of Alaska is an adventure. In this presentation, I will provide an overview of the geology of Southcentral Alaska and its exotic terranes. I will focus on the Triassic-Jurassic development of Wrangellia, which I鈥檝e been studying since 2017. I will show examples of the impact of the end-Triassic mass extinction, one of the big five, on tropical deepwater sedimentation. I will also show the first example of early Mesozoic contourites. After this overview, I will show what it鈥檚 like to do fieldwork in amazing Alaska.

With the Friday Earth Sciences Talks (FEST) we intend to bring the departments of Earth Sciences and Physical Geography together. The aim is to present (mostly) Utrecht-based Earth Sciences in an accessible way in order to stay familiar with each other鈥檚 work across disciplines. Alumni and students are also invited, in particular MSc students in Earth Sciences. Access is free and no pre-registration is required.
